April at KPLA: A Month of Growth, Awareness, and Fresh Possibilities

Open Up to Growth & New Beginnings

The month of April is all about renewal, change, and growth—both in nature and in our lives. Its name comes from the Latin word “Aperire,” meaning “to open,” reminding us that this is the time to embrace fresh starts, explore new opportunities, and welcome transformation.

As we transition from winter to spring, we see the world waking up—flowers bloom, trees regain their leaves, and the air is filled with fresh energy. But just as nature grows and opens up, so do we. This month is an opportunity to learn, laugh, and step forward with curiosity and excitement.

At KPLA, we encourage children to observe, question, and engage with the world around them. Whether we’re celebrating fun traditions, discussing health and safety, or exploring new ideas, April is the perfect month to inspire learning and creativity.

April 1 – April Fools’ Day: The Joy of Laughter and Creativity

April begins with a day of lighthearted fun and laughter—April Fools’ Day! While often associated with pranks, this day is also a great time to encourage imagination, problem-solving, and a sense of humor in children.

Teaching kids about humor helps them develop social skills, build resilience, and strengthen friendships. A well-placed joke can lighten the mood, encourage bonding, and create joyful memories. However, it’s important to teach that jokes should be kind and never hurtful.

💡 Try this: Instead of pranks, encourage kids to create silly stories, make up riddles, or invent fun, harmless surprises for their friends and family. A joke contest or a goofy dress-up day can be a fantastic way to celebrate!

Example Joke for Kids:

Why did the flower break up with the rain?

Because it felt mistreated!

April 7 – World Health Day: Small Steps to a Healthier Future

Good health is the foundation for a happy, active life, and World Health Day is a perfect reminder to teach children healthy habits that will last a lifetime.

This year, let’s focus on the basics:

✅ Nutritious Eating: Eating colorful fruits and vegetables keeps our bodies strong.

✅ Staying Active: Running, jumping, and playing outside helps build healthy bones and muscles.

✅ Hydration: Drinking water instead of sugary drinks keeps our bodies energized.

✅ Sleep & Rest: A well-rested child is a happy, focused learner!

Fun Family Challenge:

Try "Eat the Rainbow" Week—each day, focus on a different color of healthy foods (e.g., red strawberries, orange carrots, green spinach, blue blueberries). Let kids help prepare meals and talk about how each food helps their body grow!

Check out the Healthy Recipe below for a fun and nutritious way to celebrate!

April 24 – Take Your Child to Work Day

Learning Beyond the Classroom

This special day gives children a peek into the professional world and helps them understand what their parents and caregivers do every day. It’s also a chance to teach the value of responsibility, teamwork, and career possibilities.

Even if a child can’t physically go to work with their parent, there are still great ways to engage them in learning about jobs and skills.

Conversation Starters:

What do you think a doctor does all day?

How do teachers help students learn?

If you could do any job when you grow up, what would it be? Why?

Hands-On Activity:

Let kids play pretend and "run their own business" at home or in the classroom. Set up stations where they can be chefs, scientists, artists, or engineers for the day!

This is a great way to encourage creativity and problem-solving skills while making real-world connections to learning.

April 28 – World Day for Safety & Health at Work: Teaching Everyday Safety

Workplace safety is important, but safety starts at home, school, and play. This is a great time to teach children the importance of being aware of their surroundings and making safe choices.

🔹 Traffic Safety: Look both ways before crossing the street.

🔹 Fire Safety: Practice stop, drop, and roll.

🔹 Hygiene Safety: Wash hands regularly to prevent germs.

🔹 Outdoor Safety: Wear helmets when biking or skating.

Fun Learning Idea:

Set up a “Safety Detective” challenge! Ask kids to find three things in their environment that might be unsafe and come up with ways to make them better. This makes safety education fun, engaging, and memorable!

A Thought to Carry into Spring:

"April teaches us that sometimes, all we need is a little sunshine and patience, and we, too, will bloom."

🌷 Happy April from all of us at KPLA! May this month bring growth, joy, and new beginnings! 🌷
